1st Registered Leicester Longwool Farmstead Breeder in Massachusetts!
Cranberry Moon Farm raises longwool breeds of sheep, focusing on Leicester Longwools, aka English Leicester. The other breeds we use are Cotswold, Border Leicester, Bluefaced Leicester and Romney. These breeds have been choosen for fiber qualities of length, luster and durability and for their strong mothering ability and fertility. The average fleece, sheared once a year, yields 8 - 12 pounds of raw wool a staple length from 7 to 12 inches. We typically shear twice a year in order to harvest the wool for ease of processing. The clean carded wool is an absolute joy to handspin and produces a superior yarn.
We crossbreed in amongst these breeds to try to acheive a fleece quality desirable for handspinning, handweaving and fiber crafts. Each year we sell a limited number of purebred registered Leicester Longwool breeding stock, "retired" ewes, wethers and crossbred animals to handspinners and folks interested in caring for these unique rare breeds of sheep.
We are now breeding for color and will have sheep for sale that are 'Registered Natural Colored'.
